1965 Beeching liquidates the Ruabon – Dolgellau – Barmouth line
Who is the fair damsel from Dr Williams’ doing her prep on the newly closed railway track?
I am most grateful to the wonderful website created to celebrate the history of Dr Williams’ School for girls in Dolgellau for this picture and would recommend the reader to explore it at http://www.dwsoga.org.uk)
Well, she’ll be thrilled to hear you think she is a ‘fair damsel’ when I tell her! This picture is taken from our Heritage Lottery funded website http://www.dwsoga.org.uk. Our site tells the story of Dr Williams’ school through stories, photographs and original records. Definitely not just for ‘old girls’, our project was awarded ‘Very Highly Commended’ in the Women’s History Network Community History Prize 2016, sponsored by the History Press. The ‘damsel’ in question is sunning herself on the railway line adjacent to the school. This was out of bounds, she was Breaking the Rules which is one of our site’s themes. Dr Beeching had indeed closed the line and your ‘damsel’ was revising for her GCEs in 1966. Hope you enjoy exploring the rest of our site, young sir!
